Guide to Using the JR Pass: The Most Effective Way to Save Travel Costs in Japan

Japan is renowned for its modern, fast, and extremely punctual railway system. However, traveling between cities can be quite expensive. One special privilege for tourists visiting Japan is the Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass). This is considered a “powerful card” that helps you save a significant amount on transportation if you plan to travel to many places within Japan.

In this article, let Vietjet help you understand what the JR Pass is, how to buy it, how to use it, and offer an easy-to-follow guide to taking JR trains—especially helpful for first-time travelers.

1. What is the JR Pass? What is a JR Train?

First, let’s learn what the JR Pass is. This is a special train ticket reserved exclusively for foreign tourists visiting Japan under a short-term stay. With a JR Pass, you can travel unlimitedly on JR train lines during the validity period of the pass, without having to buy separate tickets for each route.

So, what is a JR train? JR stands for Japan Railways – the largest railway network in Japan, covering almost the entire country. JR operates a wide range of trains, including: local trains, rapid trains, and Shinkansen (bullet trains).

In addition to trains, JR also includes other means of transportation such as ferries, buses, etc., making it easier for tourists to purchase travel tickets and save on overall expenses.

You can refer to the JR train system and other modes of transportation supported by the Japan Rail Pass in the table below.

3. How to Purchase and Exchange the JR Pass

3.1 How to Purchase the JR Pass

Tourists can buy the pass directly upon arrival in Japan at various airports and ticket counters. However, the Japan Rail Pass bought on-site usually costs more.To save money and plan more conveniently, you can purchase it online in Vietnam via authorized agencies or travel apps. Online purchases often come with special discounts and better prices.

After ordering the JR Pass, an Exchange Order will be delivered to your home address or a designated pickup point. You may also receive a digital version via email.

3.2 How to Exchange the Pass in Japan

When you arrive in Japan, use the Exchange Order to receive your official JR Pass. The detailed steps are as follows:

  • Bring your JR Pass Exchange Order when entering Japan: Make sure to print or carry the original Exchange Order in your luggage. This is an essential document; you won’t be able to exchange for the pass if you forget it.
  • Request a "Temporary Visitor" visa stamp upon entry: When entering Japan, you must request a tourist visa stamp (Temporary Visitor) on your passport. This is a mandatory condition for using the JR Pass. If you enter with a different visa (e.g., student or work), you will not be eligible to exchange the pass.
  • Go to the nearest JR Office to exchange your pass: After obtaining your tourist visa, visit one of the JR Offices at major train stations, international airports (Narita, Haneda, Kansai...), or city centers. These offices are dedicated to exchanging orders and answering JR Pass-related questions. You can check the list of JR Offices on the official JR East or JR Central websites in advance.
  • Exchange your JR Pass: At the JR Office, present the following documents. Exchange Order (JR Pass voucher). Passport with the tourist visa stamp. Completed exchange form (if required)Staff will verify your information and issue your official JR Pass. You will choose the start date of your pass, and can also reserve seats at the counter if needed..
  • Important Note:The Exchange Order is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. Once exchanged, the JR Pass is valid for a consecutive period of 7, 14, or 21 days (depending on the type purchased), starting from the activation date.

3.3 JR Pass Ticket Prices

Depending on the type of pass, region, and duration, JR Pass prices range from around 900,000 VND to over 18,000,000 VND. When buying online, you can often apply discount codes to save even more.

JR Train Guide: You don’t need to scan the pass — there is a dedicated gate for JR Pass holders.

4. JR Train Guide for First-Time Users

If this is your first time using the JR system, don’t worry! Below is a simple guide for using JR trains, tailored for first-time travelers in Japan:

4.1 How to Look Up Train Schedules

To check JR train schedules, you can use mobile apps such as Navitime, Japan Travel, or Google Maps. These apps help you find the next available train and indicate whether it is a JR train or operated by another company.

In addition, you can enter your departure and destination points, and the app will suggest JR routes if available.

4.2 How to Enter the Train Gate

The JR Pass is not used for scanning. Inside the station, follow the signs marked with the JR symbol. Look for the gate for JR Pass holders, then present your pass to the staff at the manned gate. You must also show your passport when presenting the JR Pass.

4.3 How to Choose a Seat

You can use the JR Pass to reserve seats for free at Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket counters (located in stations). However, some trains have non-reserved seating areas, where you can simply board the train and choose any available seat.

5. Important Notes When Using the JR Pass

  • Eligibility: Only travelers entering Japan under the status of “Temporary Visitor” (tourist visa) are allowed to use the JR Pass. If you enter with a work, student, or residence visa, you will not be eligible to exchange or use the pass.
  • JR Pass Coverage Limitations: The JR Pass cannot be used on non-Japan Railways lines, such as Tokyo Metro, Keio, Odakyu, Tobu, etc. Always double-check your route before using the pass. Certain premium Shinkansen trains like Nozomi (Tokaido Line) and Mizuho (Sanyo/Kyushu Line) are not covered by the JR Pass. You can take Hikari, Sakura, or Kodama as alternatives.
  • Don’t buy a JR Pass if staying in one city: If you are staying only in Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto, and don’t plan to travel between cities, then individual tickets or city metro passes are more economical. The JR Pass is worthwhile only if you travel long distances and frequently.
  • The pass has continuous validity, not flexible: Once activated, the JR Pass is valid continuously for 7, 14, or 21 days (depending on the type), and cannot be paused. Therefore, carefully consider the activation date to avoid wasting any days.
