Traveling to Laos: Experience the Most Fun Water Festival of the Year

Laos is one of the Southeast Asian countries famous for its beautiful landscapes and many architectural works rich in culture and history. With a tropical monsoon climate similar to Vietnam, including rainy and dry seasons, the ideal time to travel to Laos is during the dry season. Lasting from November to April, the cool and less rainy weather of this period allows visitors to enjoy a variety of exploratory activities.

Especially, if you visit Laos during the dry season, around April, you have the chance to experience the Water Festival - one of the most important festivals in the Land of a Million Elephants.

1.The Water Festival in Laos - The Traditional New Year of the Land of a Million Elephants

The Water Festival (Bun Pi May) is known as the traditional New Year celebration for the people of Laos. During this three-day event held in mid-April each year, besides habits such as cleaning their homes, visiting temples to pray for peace, and seeking blessings, people also engage in water splashing as a way to wash away the dust of the past year and wish each other good luck. In Lao beliefs, water symbolizes purity, bringing spiritual cleansing.

Additionally, Laos is a country closely linked with wet rice agriculture, and water is an essential element for the growth of rice plants. Therefore, the Water Festival also signifies prayers for favorable weather and bountiful harvests.

This cultural event is also an opportunity for the Lao people to strengthen community bonds and promote the development of Laos's tourism industry.

2. When is the Water Festival in Laos?

The Water Festival in Laos takes place annually in April (according to the Buddhist calendar). Although the Water Festivals in Thailand and Laos both originate from the tradition of celebrating the New Year according to the Buddhist calendar, there are significant differences in their meanings and expressions.

While Songkran in Thailand is now famous as a bustling street festival attracting both locals and international tourists, Bunpimay in Laos emphasizes more on spiritual and traditional significance. Water splashing is seen as a form of cleansing, blessing, and showing respect, especially towards elders and monks.

3. What to Enjoy During the Water Festival in Laos?

As one of the most important festivals in Laos and a time for lively celebration and fun, visitors to the Water Festival will have a fantastic time enjoying many unique activities:

3.1 Participate in the Procession of the Queen of Spring

The most distinctive feature of Bun Pi May is the Nangsangkhane (Queen of Spring) procession in the ancient capital of Luang Prabang. The girl honored as the Queen of Spring is chosen through a beauty contest and must possess qualities such as beauty, good character, hard work, and intelligence. On the day of the festival, the Queen of Spring wears splendid traditional attire, a crown, holds a sword and a ring of fire in her hands, and sits on a brightly decorated float.

The parade travels through the streets amidst the sound of drums, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere.

3.2 Buddha Bathing

This is a solemn and important ritual during Bun Pi May. On this day, Buddha statues are carried by monks and placed in the temple courtyard for people and visitors to perform the Buddha bathing ceremony. Fragrant water, made from water, turmeric, essential oils, and Dokkhoun flower petals (a yellow flower that blooms across Laos during Bun Pi May), is respectfully sprinkled onto the statues. After the ceremony, Lao people collect this water and bring it home, sprinkling it on family members and around the house to wish for peace and luck.

3.3 Water Splashing

Water splashing is the most characteristic activity of this festival, typically starting at 8 AM and ending at 4 PM on the last day of the Water Festival in Laos. People of all genders, ages, and ethnicities participate in splashing water on each other, which symbolizes well wishes. Younger people splash water on elders to wish them longevity and good health. According to Lao beliefs, those who get soaked with water will have good luck and be loved by many in the coming year.

3.4 Enjoy Rich Lao Cuisine

Visiting Laos during this time, don't miss the chance to enjoy unique delicacies. During these days, Lao people prepare many delicious dishes to worship their ancestors and invite guests to their homes. Besides special dishes, two dishes that are always present on the dining table during this occasion are:

  • Khao Niew: This is an indispensable dish in the Lao feast. Khao Niew is sticky rice cooked from glutinous rice, often served with other dishes like larb, grilled chicken, and tam som.
  • Larb: This is a raw meat salad made from minced beef, pork, or chicken, mixed with ingredients like roasted rice powder, shallots, chili, lemongrass, and lime. Larb is usually eaten with fresh vegetables and sticky rice.
