The Most Unique Festivals in Laos Throughout the Year

Laos is known as the "Land of Festivals" with hundreds of unique festivals held annually.

1. “Water Festival” Bunpimay

The Water Festival (Bunpimay) is a traditional annual festival in Laos. This festival symbolizes well wishes for the new year, aiming to bring freshness and prosperity to all things, and pray for good weather and a prosperous, lucky new year.Bunpimay Festival typically lasts for three days, with the first day marking the last day of the old year. People clean their houses, prepare fragrant water and flowers. In the afternoon, villagers gather at the temple to offer prayers, listen to sermons from the monks, and participate in the ritual bathing of Buddha statues. The fragrant water poured over the statues is collected and taken home for family blessings. To show respect and convey good wishes, younger people splash water on the elderly. The wetter one becomes, the happier they will be. People also splash water on homes, altars, livestock, and tools, believing that clean, fresh water will wash away bad luck and illness, bringing peace and health in the new year.If you wish to join the Bunpimay Festival, head to Vang Vieng or the former capital of Laos, Luang Prabang—two major locations for this event. Be prepared to receive water blessings and get soaked from head to toe, whether walking or driving. Enjoy the festival atmosphere and remember to protect your electronics!

  • When: April 13 to 15 annually, lasting for three days.
