3. Formation and Development of Suvarnabhumi International Airport

The airport named Suvarnabhumi, meaning "Golden Land," was personally named by King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand. It was planned to begin construction in 1973 but was only implemented in 2022. In 2005, Airports of Thailand PLC took over and completed the project. In September 2006, the airport was inaugurated and started operations with the first international flights to Hong Kong and Singapore. Since September 16, 2006, the airport has allowed several airlines to operate, becoming the main airport of Bangkok half a month later.

Suvarnabhumi Airport covers an area of approximately 32.8 km2 with two runways, each measuring 3700 meters and 3500 meters, constructed with concrete asphalt. Additionally, the airport has a 120-aircraft parking bay.

Suvarnabhumi Airport has 2 terminals, including the main terminal and a satellite terminal. The main terminal spans 563,000 m2 with 8 floors serving various functions:

  • Floor B: This floor houses the Airport Rail Link (ARL) subway station for transportation between Suvarnabhumi Airport and the center of Bangkok.
  • Floor 1: This is the arrival hall for group passengers and a pickup area for various vehicles (buses, taxis, etc.). It also accommodates offices for airlines.
  • Floor 2: This floor welcomes domestic and international flights with customs and control areas, transportation counters, hotels, baggage claim belts, etc.
  • Floor 3: The airport's lounge area, restaurant system, exits or entrances to the parking lot, etc.
  • Floor 4: Includes check-in areas, security checks, duty-free shops, etc., to serve domestic and international flights.
  • Floor 5: The office area for the Star Alliance airline alliance.
  • Floor 6: A system of restaurants serving passengers.
  • Floor 7: The airport's observation deck.

Additionally, the airport has Satellite Terminal 1 (SAT1), expected to operate in 2023. It is a building with 4 floors, 28 boarding gates, equipped with an automated check-in system, baggage handling system, etc.

You can catch the Airport Express Bus at the passenger terminal, gate 8. The buses operate from 5 am to 12 am daily, with a travel time of approximately 45 minutes and a cost of around 150 Baht (103,000 VND) per trip. The routes are as follows:

  • - AE 1: Airport - Silom Road
  • - AE 2: Airport - Khawsarn Road
  • - AE 3: Airport - Sukhumvit – Ekkamai
  • - AE 4: Airport - Hua Lampong Station

6.2 Airport Rail Link (ARL)

The Airport Rail Link provides a fast and convenient mode of transportation, suitable for passengers with light luggage. It operates from Monday to Friday between 5:56 am and 12:02 am and on weekends and holidays from 6:02 am to 12:02 am. The trains run every 15 minutes, with a total travel time of approximately 30 minutes. The ticket prices range from 45 Baht (31,500 VND) for a single trip to 150 Baht (102,000 VND) for a non-stop journey. The routes are as follows:

  • - City Line: Lat Krabang – Ban Thap Chang – Hua Mak – Ramkhamhaeng – Makkasan – Ratchaprarop – Phaya Thai
  • - Airport Express: Suvarnabhumi Airport - Makkasan Station

Passengers with minimal luggage often prefer the Airport Rail Link for its speed and safety.

6.3 BMTA Public Bus

Public buses pick up passengers at the airport and have 6 to 8 stops with a total travel time of about 1 hour. The fare for this mode of public transportation is approximately 24 Baht (16,000 VND) to 35 Baht (24,000 VND), depending on the route. However, please note that the operating hours vary for different bus routes. Some routes include:

- Route 549: Suvarnabhumi Airport – Minburi

- Route 550: Suvarnabhumi Airport – Happy Land

- Route 551: Suvarnabhumi Airport – Victory Monument

6.4 Taxi

Taxis at Suvarnabhumi International Airport operate 24/7 and are suitable for large groups with bulky luggage. There are two main types: Ordinary taxi (for 2-3 passengers with light luggage) and Maxi taxi (for 3-4 passengers with more luggage). The cost of a taxi to the city center is around 350 Baht (approximately 240,000 VND). Taxis can be found at gates 3, 4, 7, and 8 on the first floor.

6.5 Ride-Sharing (Grab) Taxi

The Grab application is widely used in Thailand. You can use the app to book a ride from the airport to various locations in the city. Depending on the type of car you choose (standard or premium), the cost ranges from 400 to 600 Baht (approximately 270,000 VND - 400,000 VND).
