Shifen Waterfall – A Natural Gem Amid Taiwan's Mountains

Tucked away in the lush mountains of New Taipei, Shifen Waterfall (also known as Thap Phan Waterfall) has earned the nickname “the Niagara of Taiwan” thanks to its powerful 20-meter cascade of white water. Beyond its majestic beauty, the site is also a haven for nature lovers seeking a peaceful escape into the great outdoors.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the highlights of this natural wonder, how to get there, and everything you need to know for a memorable visit.

Shifen Waterfall – A Natural Gem Hidden in Taiwan’s Verdant Mountains

The majestic beauty of Shifen Waterfall in Taiwan.

1. Shifen Waterfall – One of Taiwan’s Most Impressive Natural Wonders

1.1 Where is Shifen Waterfall?

Located in Pingxi District of New Taipei City, Shifen Waterfall sits on the main Keelung River and is just a short distance from the well-known Shifen Old Street. The region’s unique geography was formed through tectonic faulting and centuries of river erosion, resulting in fascinating formations like Yanjingdong (Glasses Cave) and mysterious circular potholes in the surrounding rock.

The name “Shifen” (which means “Ten Portions”) originates from a nearby village that initially had ten households. These early settlers would divide up supplies into ten equal parts during times of distribution. The naming tradition mirrors that of Jiufen (“Nine Portions”), another famous tourist destination in northern Taiwan.

1.2 The Breathtaking Beauty of Shifen Waterfall

Standing at about 20 meters high and 40 meters wide, Shifen is Taiwan’s largest waterfall in terms of water volume and width. The waterfall pours over the cliffs in a dramatic curtain-like fashion, creating a scene that is both powerful and poetic — earning it the title “the mini Niagara of Taiwan.” Though swimming is prohibited due to the depth of the plunge pool below, visitors can safely admire the waterfall from various lookout points or take a scenic stroll across the Siguangtan Suspension Bridge to explore the area’s fascinating geological formations.

Shifen is often called the “Mini Niagara” of Taiwan due to its shape and power.

2. Unmissable Experiences at Shifen Waterfall

2.1 A Forest Walk to the Main Falls

The journey to Shifen Waterfall is more than just a sightseeing trip — it’s an immersive nature walk. You’ll follow a scenic forest trail, cross the Siguangtan Bridge, and pass by small streams and moss-covered stones before reaching the waterfall itself. The sound of cascading water grows louder as you approach, building anticipation with every step.

2.2 Witness the “Rainbow Pool” and Stunning Vistas

One of Shifen Waterfall’s most magical features is the "Rainbow Pool", located at the base of the falls. Thanks to the interplay of sunlight, mist, and the site’s unique rock structure, rainbows often appear hovering above the surface on clear days — a truly picture-perfect moment.

You can enjoy views of the waterfall from various perspectives. Observation decks are strategically placed along the path, allowing you to see the emerald-blue waters from above or capture a panoramic shot from below.

2.3 Discover Unique Geological Formations

Shifen isn’t just for casual tourists — it’s also a hotspot for geology enthusiasts. Along the walking trails, you’ll encounter anticlines (folded rock layers), natural potholes, and the famed Yanjingdong (Glasses Cave) — all formed through thousands of years of erosion and tectonic activity.

2.4 Combine Nature with Culture at Shifen Old Street

Just a 30-minute walk from the waterfall lies Shifen Old Street, a beloved attraction in Taipei. Visitors can release sky lanterns with wishes written on them, stroll along the railway tracks through the village, and indulge in local street food at lively night markets. It’s the perfect cultural addition to round out your Shifen nature adventure.

3. How to Get to Shifen Waterfall

Located in Pingxi District, Shifen Waterfall is about 1 to 1.5 hours from downtown Taipei. Depending on your time and preferred experience, you can choose from the following transportation options:

3.1 By Train – Explore the Historic Pingxi Railway Line

This is the most popular and convenient option for independent travelers and offers a unique local experience.

  • Take the MRT to Taipei Main Station, then transfer to a Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) train to Ruifang Station.
  • At Ruifang, transfer to the Pingxi Line and get off at Shifen Station.

From Shifen Station, it's about a 15–20 minute walk to the waterfall area following clearly marked signs. Along the way, you’ll cross the charming Siguangtan Suspension Bridge and pass several local snack stands.

Taking the train is one of the most common ways to reach Shifen Waterfall.

3.2 By Bus – A Budget-Friendly Option

You can take Bus 795 from Muzha MRT Station directly to the Shifen Waterfall Visitor Center. However, bus service is infrequent, and the journey may take over 90 minutes, not including wait times.

3.3 By Taxi or Self-Drive – Flexible and Time-Saving

For groups of 3–4 people or families, hiring a taxi for the day or renting a car from Taipei is a great option. The drive is about 40–45 km and takes around 1 hour.

The main advantage of driving is the flexibility to visit multiple attractions in one day. However, this option is more expensive than public transportation.

4. Tips for Visiting Shifen Waterfall

4.1 Best Time to Visit

The ideal seasons to visit Shifen Waterfall are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). During these months, the weather is pleasant, ranging from 15°C to 25°C, with lower rainfall—perfect for outdoor activities and easy trekking.

4.2 Opening Hours

Shifen Waterfall is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. In summer (June–September), closing time is extended to 6:00 PM. Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before closing to allow time to purchase entry tickets.

4.3 Visitor Guidelines

  • Free Admission: Entry to Shifen Waterfall is free of charge.
  • No Drone Zone: Drones are strictly prohibited to ensure the safety and tranquility of the area.
  • No Swimming: Swimming in the waterfall pool is strictly forbidden for safety reasons.

4.4 Additional Tips

  • Dress appropriately: Wear non-slip walking shoes and comfortable clothing, as you’ll be trekking on stone paths and crossing suspension bridges.
  • Safety First: The steps and bridge may be slippery, especially during foggy or rainy weather. Walk carefully and avoid leaning too close to the railings.
  • Plan your time: Allocate at least 1–2 hours to explore the waterfall and surrounding sights like the Siguangtan Bridge and scenic viewpoints.
