One-Day Kamakura Travel Itinerary from Tokyo: Detailed Transportation Guide and Destinations

Not as bustling as Tokyo, Kamakura is a destination chosen by many Vietnamese travelers who want to experience a quieter and more traditional Japan. This coastal city in Kanagawa Prefecture was once an important political center of Japan during the Shogunate. Today, Kamakura attracts visitors with its ancient temples, charming local streets, and the coastal train line that runs along the shore.

With a distance of just over an hour from Tokyo, Kamakura is suitable for first-time visitors to Japan.

With limited time, many people wonder: is it worth going to Kamakura in one day from Tokyo, and how to do it efficiently? This article will provide a detailed transportation guide, suggest a practical itinerary, and highlight essential tips for Vietnamese travelers to effectively and economically plan their one-day trip to Kamakura.

1. Should you go to Kamakura for one day from Tokyo?

For Vietnamese travelers visiting Japan, the answer is yes if you have a limited stay in Tokyo and want to find a destination rich in cultural and historical significance to balance the modern pace of the central city, while also avoiding the hassle of changing hotels or traveling too far. With its close distance and the ability to return in one day using public transport, Kamakura meets these criteria well and is suitable for many independent Vietnamese travelers.

From Tokyo, Kamakura is located in Kanagawa Prefecture and has a direct train connection. The city is not too large, and the main attractions are concentrated along a transport axis, making it possible to visit in one day if you start early and plan wisely.

However, Kamakura has many sections that require walking, uphill climbs, and stair climbing at temples. Therefore, the one-day Kamakura itinerary is best suited for those with average fitness or better, and comfortable shoes are recommended.

To have a flexible itinerary exploring Tokyo and nearby destinations like Kamakura, travelers can check Vietjet flights to Japan with various flexible schedules. See details HERE.

From Tokyo, travelers can easily move to Kamakura to enjoy a day trip full of experiences.

2. What to take from Tokyo to Kamakura?

2.1 Take the JR train from Tokyo

The simplest and most applicable way to travel from Tokyo to Kamakura is to take the JR Yokosuka Line.

You can refer to the following route:

  • Depart from Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station
  • Go straight to Kamakura Station, no need to change trains

Travel time: about 55–60 minutes. The advantage of this line is that it is easy to navigate, suitable for first-time visitors to Japan who are not familiar with changing trains.

The train line connecting Tokyo with Kamakura makes it easy for travelers to move without needing to change trains multiple times.

2.2 From Shinjuku/Shibuya

If you are in the Shinjuku or Shibuya area and plan to combine Kamakura with Enoshima beach, you can go in the following direction:

  • Odakyu Line from Shinjuku to Fujisawa
  • Change to the Enoden train to go to Kamakura or Enoshima

This method takes longer (about 90 minutes), but in return, the Enoden line runs close to residential areas and along the coast, providing a very unique experience.

Booking Vietjet flights to Japan early helps to have a flexible itinerary and optimize travel costs. See details HERE.

2.3 Train cards & tickets to use

If you are only traveling from Tokyo to Kamakura and returning in one day without adding nearby points, the Suica or PASMO card is the simplest and most applicable choice. With this card, you just need to load money and swipe the card when passing through the gate, without worrying about buying individual tickets or calculating complex routes.

On the other hand, if you plan to combine visiting Kamakura and Enoshima island in one day, travelers should consider using the Enoshima - Kamakura Freepass. This ticket allows round trips from the Tokyo area, most commonly from Shinjuku station, to Fujisawa using the Odakyu line, and can be used unlimitedly on the Enoden train line connecting Kamakura with Enoshima throughout the day. This way, travelers can move flexibly between attractions without incurring additional costs, especially suitable for a one-day Kamakura itinerary that requires multiple train segments in the area.

Choosing the right type of train ticket will make the one-day trip to Kamakura more convenient and economical.

3. Suggested one-day Kamakura itinerary

- Stroll along Komachi-dori: Right near Kamakura station, Komachi-dori is a pedestrian street filled with restaurants, souvenirs, and local sweets. Travelers can have a light snack, drink coffee, or buy gifts before continuing their journey.

Noon: Hase area and Great Buddha of Kamakura

- Take the Enoden train to Hase station

- Visit Kotoku-in: This is where the famous Great Buddha statue is located, a symbol associated with Kamakura. The area is not too large, with an average visit time of 30 - 45 minutes.

- Visit Enoshima island: Travelers walk across the bridge to the island, explore the coastal area, eat seafood, or go up the Enoshima Sea Candle observation tower to watch the sunset.

The ancient temples are a prominent mark, creating the unique historical and cultural identity of Kamakura.

4. Suggested combined itinerary near Kamakura

Thanks to its location south of Tokyo and convenient connection via the train network, Kamakura is not only suitable for a standalone day trip but also easy to combine with nearby destinations. Among them, the two most popular and practical combinations for Vietnamese travelers are Kamakura - Enoshima and Kamakura - Yokohama.

Depending on your experience preferences and time budget for the day, travelers can choose these sightseeing itineraries.

4.1 Kamakura – Enoshima

Kamakura – Enoshima is considered a "classic" pair of destinations for day trips from Tokyo, as these two areas are close to each other and directly connected by the Enoden train line. After completing the main attractions in Kamakura such as Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Great Buddha of Kamakura, or Hasedera Temple, travelers can continue to Enoshima in just about 20 - 25 minutes by train. This journey is for those who want to enjoy the historical-religious atmosphere in the morning and admire the open coastal scenery and relax at the end of the day.

Enoshima is suitable for spending the latter part of the day when travelers no longer have much energy to walk continuously.

This area has comfortable walking paths, many seafood restaurants, cafes overlooking the sea, and easily accessible viewpoints. If there is still enough time and the weather is favorable, travelers can go up the Enoshima Sea Candle observation tower to enjoy the panoramic view of Shonan Bay, especially beautiful in the late afternoon and sunset.

4.2 Kamakura – Yokohama

In case you do not want to go to Enoshima or the weather is not favorable for coastal activities, travelers can consider combining Kamakura with Yokohama. From Kamakura, traveling to Yokohama by JR train is quite convenient, taking only about 25 - 30 minutes.

Travelers visiting Yokohama can spend the evening strolling around the Minato Mirai area, enjoying the view of the port, dining in Yokohama's Chinatown, or simply resting before heading back to Tokyo. This combination is suitable for those who want a day trip that clearly transitions from traditional space to modern urbanity, while not having to travel too far or change lines complicatedly.

Yokohama is a modern, bustling port city but not as densely packed as Tokyo.
