New Zealand Tourist Visa Application Procedures & Tips for Independent Travelers

New Zealand, a stunning island nation in Oceania, is famous for its breathtaking natural landscapes and unique culture — making it a dream destination for many Vietnamese travelers. However, before you can set foot in the Land of the Kiwis, obtaining a tourist visa is a must. This article provides a detailed step-by-step guide on how to apply for a New Zealand tourist visa independently — from required documents and application procedures to practical tips for improving your approval chances. Let’s get ready for your journey to discover the beauty of New Zealand!

Procedures & Tips for Applying for a New Zealand Tourist Visa (Self-Application)

New Zealand boasts magnificent landscapes, making it one of the most desired destinations for travelers.

1. Types of New Zealand Visas

Based on the purpose of entry, New Zealand visas are generally divided into the following categories:

  • Visitor Visa: For those visiting New Zealand for leisure, sightseeing, short-term study, or non-work activities. The maximum stay period is usually up to 9 months.
  • Family/Visitor Visa: For travelers visiting relatives or friends living, working, or studying in New Zealand.
  • Student Visa: For students who wish to study at a New Zealand institution for more than 3 months.
  • Work Visa: Covers multiple subtypes such as skilled worker visa, contract-based employment visa, Working Holiday visa (for certain countries), or combined work-study visas.
  • Resident Visa: For individuals who intend to live permanently in New Zealand, typically through skilled migration, investment, or family reunion programs.

Additionally, depending on how you submit your application, there are two main forms:

  • Paper Visa (Stamped): Applications are submitted directly at the New Zealand Embassy or Consulate. Approved visas are issued as a label or stamp in your passport.
  • E-Visa (Electronic Visa): Submitted and processed entirely online through the Immigration Online system or NZeTA platform (for short-term entry). This is currently the most convenient and widely used method.

A visa is your “entry ticket” to explore the Land of the Kiwis.

2. What to Prepare When Applying for a New Zealand Tourist Visa

2.1 How to Apply for a New Zealand Visa Online

Travelers can apply for a tourist visa through New Zealand Immigration’s official Immigration Online system by following these steps:

Step 1: Prepare all required documents

Make sure all documents are in PDF format and photos are in digital form. Any non-English documents must be officially translated into English.

  • Digital passport photo (white background, passport-size)
  • Scanned valid passport (with personal details and signature pages)
  • Detailed travel itinerary in New Zealand (written in English)
  • Financial proof (bank statements, savings book, etc.)
  • Proof of employment and ties to Vietnam (leave approval letter, labor contract, child birth certificate, etc.)

Step 2: Access the online system and create an account

  • Go to the official New Zealand Immigration website: https://www.immigration.govt.nz
  • Create a RealMe account using your email to submit your online visa application.

Step 3: Submit your visa application

  • After logging in, select “Visitor Visa” from the visa categories available.
  • Fill in all personal, travel, and financial information.
  • Upload your prepared documents.

Step 4: Pay the application fee

  • After completing the form, the system will prompt you to pay the fee via international payment cards (Mastercard, Visa, or UnionPay).
  • Note: The fee is non-refundable, even if your visa is denied.

Step 5: Wait for processing results

  • Once payment is complete, your application will be reviewed by the New Zealand Immigration Department.
  • Processing time: Typically 10–30 working days.

2.2 How to Apply for a New Zealand Visa In Person

2.2.1 Required Documents for Direct Application

If you are submitting your visa application directly, you need to prepare the following documents:

  • Completed INZ 1017 visa application form
  • Two recent passport-sized photos (taken within the last 6 months) per applicant
  • Original valid passport (or notarized copy if the original is not yet submitted)
  • Visa application fee
  • Full copy of household registration book (for Vietnamese citizens) or residence permit in Vietnam (for foreigners)
  • National ID card (for Vietnamese citizens)
  • Personal CV (no need for local authority certification)
  • Family declaration form
  • Financial proof showing you can cover at least NZD 1,000/month for living expenses, or NZD 400/month if accommodation is prepaid or arranged. Accepted documents include bank statements, savings books, fixed deposit slips, or a completed INZ 1025 Sponsorship Form if your trip is sponsored by a New Zealand citizen or resident.
  • Employment confirmation letter and approved leave, or business registration and tax receipts (for business owners), or retirement card/pension slip if retired.
  • Other documents showing ties to Vietnam (e.g., marriage certificate, children’s birth certificates, savings, shares, or real estate).

Procedures & Tips for Applying for a New Zealand Tourist Visa (Self-Application)

Vietnamese travelers can apply for a New Zealand visa either in person or online.

2.2.2 Where to Submit Your Visa Application

New Zealand Visa Application Centre (VAC): Resco Building, 5th Floor, 94–96 Nguyen Du Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, 70000, Vietnam.

2.3 New Zealand Visa Fees

The official New Zealand government visa fee for a tourist visa is 376 NZD (approximately 5,900,000 VND).

If you submit your application through VFS Global, you’ll also need to pay:

  • Paper application service fee: 900,000 VND (≈ 40 USD)
  • Passport submission support fee for online applications: 680,000 VND (≈ 30 USD)

(Fees are subject to change depending on exchange rates and processing time.)

3. Frequently Asked Questions About the New Zealand Visa

3.1 How far in advance should I apply for a New Zealand visa?

The processing time for a New Zealand tourist visa is typically 1–2 weeks (business days), depending on the type of visa and when you apply. During peak travel seasons, it may take longer. To avoid delays or missing your flight, you should submit your visa application at least 3–4 weeks before your intended departure date. Ideally, start preparing your documents even earlier so you have enough time to provide additional paperwork if requested or to handle any unexpected issues.

3.2 How long is a New Zealand visa valid?

The validity of a New Zealand visa depends on the visa type and your purpose of travel. A tourist visa generally allows a stay of up to 9 months within an 18-month period, although this is uncommon for short-term tourists. In most cases, visas are issued for 1 to 3 months per entry, depending on your itinerary and personal documentation.

3.3 Which countries can you visit with a New Zealand visa?

A New Zealand visa is not a Schengen or multi-country visa, meaning it does not grant automatic entry to other countries besides New Zealand.

However, having a valid New Zealand visa may sometimes improve your chances of obtaining visas for other countries, as it shows good travel history. That said, travelers must still check each country’s specific visa requirements and apply separately — holding a New Zealand visa does not exempt you from visa requirements elsewhere.
