Must-visit attractions in Hon Son, Kien Giang

Hon Son radiates the peaceful beauty of a coastal countryside.

1. Introduction to Hon Son Island

Hon Son Island (also known as Hang Rai Island) is a small island located in Ha Tien Bay, under Lai Son Commune, Kien Hai District, Kien Giang Province. This island commune is situated about 65 km southwest of Rach Gia City and approximately 90 km from Phu Quoc Island. Hon Son covers an area of just 11.5 km² but boasts majestic landscapes with rich and diverse vegetation, pristine forests, tall mountains, and beautiful beaches.

While not as well-known as Phu Quoc or the Nam Du Archipelago in the same bay area, Hon Son has its own unique appeal that attracts nature lovers and those who appreciate raw, unspoiled beauty.

2. Top Tourist Spots in Hon Son

Because the island is compact, most attractions in Hon Son are located close to one another, allowing visitors to explore multiple places in a single trip:

2.1 Ma Thien Lanh Mountain

Among Hon Son’s 7 mountains, Ma Thien Lanh is the tallest, standing at approximately 450 meters above sea level. This mountain is also tied to a mystical legend—the story of “Fairy Yard” (Sân Tiên) located at its peak.According to local tales, fairies from the heavens, captivated by the poetic beauty of the landscape, descended to Ma Thien Lanh’s summit to dance and play.

The breathtaking view of Hon Son from the mountaintops.

The view from Ma Thien Lanh’s summit is truly awe-inspiring for first-time visitors. From here, you can gaze across Ha Tien Bay, admiring its rolling mountains, vast sea, and the sight of local fishing boats bobbing gently in the water.Though the climb is steep and challenging, those who conquer the journey are richly rewarded with a magnificent view—and no regrets.

2.2 Ong Rong Mountain

Alongside Ma Thien Lanh, Ong Rong Mountain is another attractive trekking spot on Hon Son. It stands at a more modest height of 250 meters, but the trail to the top is more challenging, involving forest and stream crossings. This rugged terrain is exactly what draws trekking enthusiasts to conquer Ong Rong’s summit. Once at the top, you’ll be greeted with a dreamy, harmonious landscape where mountains and sea blend seamlessly.

At Ong Rong’s peak, visitors can check in with a unique ancient cycad tree. No one knows its exact age, but it grows out from a cliffside with a thick, curled trunk that resembles a coiled dragon—likely the origin of the mountain’s name, “Ong Rong” or “Dragon Elder Mountain”. Interestingly, there are also two stone chessboards at the summit, and folklore says they were once used by celestial beings who descended to play chess and enjoy the tranquil beauty of nature.

2.3 Bai Bang

Must-visit tourist attractions in Hon Son, Kien Giang

Bai Bang at the magical moment between day and night – a breathtakingly beautiful scene.

Bai Bang is one of the most famous destinations on Hon Son Island. It is considered the most beautiful beach on the island. Although still quite pristine and not heavily developed, Bai Bang boasts its own unique charm with blue seas, white sands, and golden sunshine. In addition to swimming and relaxing walks, Bai Bang is also one of the best spots on Hon Son to watch the sunrise and sunset. From Bai Bang, it’s only about 500 meters to Ma Thien Lanh Mountain.

2.4 Bai Thien Tue

Located on the west side of Hon Son, Bai Thien Tue is another beach popular among tourists. It appears as if mother nature sculpted it into a crescent bay jutting into the sea, surrounded by pristine forests, giving it a very distinctive look. The beach also features many rocks of various shapes that intrigue and delight curious visitors.

2.5 Bai Bac

Among the beaches on Hon Son, Bai Bac has the highest population density. Even so, it retains the crystal-clear charm of the sea. Here you’ll find the famous "Ong Rua Hon Son" statue, a popular photo check-in spot. Bai Bac is also the most convenient beach for a rest stop, from where you can easily move on to Bai Nha, Bai Gieng, Bai Thien Tue, or even climb Ong Rong Mountain.

2.6 Bai Xep

lso known as "the beach with the coconut tree," Bai Xep is a small beach nestled between Bai Bang and Bai Bac. Despite its deserted landscape and scattered rocky outcrops, it is best known for its legendary coconut tree that leans over two large rocks, forming a natural seat perfect for tourist photos. If you're in Hon Son, a selfie at this spot is a must.

2.7 Lai Son Pier – Bai Nha

The main pier of Lai Son commune is located at Bai Nha, which is why it's also known as Bai Nha Pier. Every day, boats traveling to Hon Son Island dock here. This is also the first place you’ll arrive at when visiting Lai Son island commune. The pier stretches out into the sea with a vast backdrop of sky and ocean, making it a popular photo spot for young travelers. Especially at sunrise, it’s a peaceful place to watch the sun rise, welcome fishing boats returning to shore, and soak in the tranquil early morning atmosphere of the fishing village.

2.8 Bai Gieng Market

Although not as well-known as other beaches on Hon Son, Bai Gieng attracts food lovers with its diverse offerings. Here, you’ll find Bai Gieng Market – dubbed the “seafood paradise” – where you can explore a variety of fresh fish, shrimp, and Hon Son specialties.

2.9 Bai Da Chai

True to its name, Bai Da Chai is a beach scattered with countless stones and boulders along the shore. These rocks, in all shapes and sizes, create an eye-catching landscape that fascinates visitors. With its untouched surroundings, it’s an ideal place to wander, watch the sky and sea, listen to the waves, and enjoy a rare moment of serenity. This spot is perfect for those seeking to recharge away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

2.10 Dinh Ong Nam Hai (Nam Hai Whale Temple)

Dinh Ong Nam Hai, also known as Lang Ong Nam Hai, is a spiritual site for the locals of Hon Son. Here, they worship the whale god “Ca Ong” – a tradition rooted in their fishing culture. Before heading out to sea, fishermen often come here to pray for safe and prosperous trips. Visitors are welcome to explore and offer prayers at this sacred place.

2.11 Yen Ngua Peak

While Ma Thien Lanh Peak is known for its majestic beauty, Yen Ngua Peak offers a simpler, more rustic view. From here, you can take in a panoramic yet intimate view of Hon Son – its peaceful local life, the pier, boats, clear sea, forest-covered mountains, and the honest, humble islanders who call it home.

2.12 The Nameless Waterfall

Near Bai Nha, across Xuyen Nui Road, lies an unnamed waterfall often referred to as Hon Son Waterfall. It flows from Ma Thien Lanh Mountain and cascades over multiple rocky tiers, creating a scene that is both powerful and picturesque. This waterfall is also a rare source of fresh water on the island. Combine your trip to Ma Thien Lanh Peak with a stop here for photos and to enjoy the soothing sound of flowing water.
