Impressive Beauty of Chongqing, China’s Overpass

Nicknamed the "City of Bridges," Chongqing is renowned for its modern and complex transportation network with 24 bridges connecting the urban areas on both sides of the Yangtze River. Among these, the Chongqing - Huangjuewan Overpass stands out as the most complex overpass in the world. Join Vietjet to learn some interesting facts about this remarkable bridge!

The Impressive Beauty of Chongqing, China’s Overpass

Chongqing is dubbed the "City of Bridges" with an extremely complex transportation system.

1. An Overview of Chongqing

1.1 Geographical Location

Chongqing is the largest city in China, situated at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, right at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River. This unique location makes it both a highly modern metropolis and a place with a distinctly ancient and serene charm.

Chongqing is not only a key economic, cultural, and technological hub of China but also one of the country's most popular tourist destinations, attracting a vast number of visitors.

Chongqing is a place where serene natural landscapes blend seamlessly with bustling urban prosperity.

1.2 Transportation System

Chongqing is also the most populous city in China, with 30.75 million people. Its mostly hilly terrain and limited land area have necessitated the development of multi-dimensional, maze-like infrastructure and transportation designs. This uniqueness has endowed Chongqing with distinctive architecture and many impressive and attractive tourist destinations.

When visiting Chongqing, you will be amazed by the long escalators that cut through mountains and take you from the top straight down to the base, or the nearly 40-meter-high lanes suspended in mid-air. You will never quite know which level of the city you are on, even when walking through bustling streets.

Due to Chongqing's unique transportation system, its bridges are also designed in a very distinctive manner, unlike any other structures in the world. The most notable of these is the Huang Jeevan Overpass, famously known as the "spaghetti maze."

2. Chongqing Overpass, China - The "Spaghetti Maze"

The Chongqing Overpass began construction in 2009 and was officially opened in 2017, after nearly eight years of construction. The bridge is considered an architectural marvel due to its vast scale and complex design.

The overpass is divided into five levels, with 20 lanes branching into eight different directions, connecting to three main highways as well as other roads in the area, with a total length of 16,414 meters. The highest lane of the system is 37 meters above ground, equivalent to the height of a 12-story building.

The complex design of the Huangjuewan Overpass is necessary because 76% of Chongqing's area consists of hills, making daily life and transportation challenging for its residents. Before this bridge, people had to cross mountains and rivers daily to travel from one district to another. Now, with the overpass, travel time has been significantly reduced, from 2 hours to 30 minutes, and from 25 minutes to 10 minutes.

The Huangjuewan Overpass is also very convenient for tourists visiting Chongqing, as it connects the city center, the airport, and the highway, as well as historical sites such as the Great Buddha Temple and Guangyang Island. It is considered the largest, most complex, and most useful traffic hub in southwestern China, serving as the "lifeline" of the mountainous city of Chongqing.

3. Is it Easy to Get Lost on the Chongqing Overpass in China?

Since its debut, the Huangjuewan Overpass has amazed and astonished both domestic and international internet users. However, many have expressed concerns that drivers might easily get lost due to the numerous levels and lanes, with some joking that "even GPS gets confused."

However, Liu Bangjun, the chief designer of the project, assured that navigating the overpass is not as challenging as many believe. The design team has also considered the possibility of drivers taking the wrong lane and has added additional ramps to make it easier for vehicles to turn around.

The overpass is equipped with ample signage and detailed direction boards in easily visible areas, ensuring that despite the eight different directions, drivers need not worry about navigating the bridge. If you take the wrong route, you can reorient yourself within five minutes, and at most, it takes about ten minutes to get back on track, contrary to rumors of "spending the whole day." Additionally, some satellite navigation devices have been successfully tested on the overpass's traffic junctions.

Despite its complex design, the overpass is equipped with numerous signs and additional ramps to help drivers easily turn around.

4. Travel Guide to Chongqing

4.1 Traveling to Chongqing

The only and fastest way to travel from Vietnam to Chongqing is by airplane. However, currently, there are no airlines in Vietnam offering direct flights from Vietnamese provinces and cities to Chongqing. Most flights land in Guangzhou, after which travelers can continue flying to Chongqing Jiangbei Airport, which is about 20 kilometers from Chongqing. From there, you can take a taxi or a train to the city center.

4.2 Getting Around in Chongqing

Chongqing's streets have a complex transportation system, resulting in a variety of transportation options. However, taxis, buses, and the subway are the three most convenient modes of transportation for tourists.

  • Subway: Comprising six lines, ticket prices are calculated based on distance. If you want to experience a unique mode of transportation, you can choose the subway. The ticket prices are reasonable, and the equipment is very modern.
  • Taxi: The fare is 10 yuan for the first 3 km (about 35,000 VND) and 2 yuan for each subsequent kilometer (about 7,000 VND). There are additional charges during peak and off-peak hours. Although more expensive, taxis offer more flexibility in timing, especially when traveling in a large group.
  • Bus: With 500 routes, the average fare is 2 yuan per person (about 7,000 VND). This is the cheapest mode of transportation and allows you to enjoy the city's scenery.

  • Book Your Flight in Advance: Based on travel experiences, it is recommended to book your flight tickets at least 1 to 2 months in advance to save on costs.
