Explore Hang Dau Water Tower: A 130-Year-Old Landmark

Amidst the vibrant and modern heartbeat of Hanoi, there still exist silent structures carrying the breath of time. Among them, the Hang Dau Water Tower stands as a “witness” to the capital’s urban history since the French colonial period, for more than 130 years.

Located at the intersection of six Old Quarter streets, the round tower with its moss-covered gray stone has long become a familiar part of Hanoi people’s memories. However, few know that behind its aged appearance lies an interesting story about architecture, engineering, and culture. In this article, let’s explore this symbolic structure and a detailed guide for visiting Hang Dau Water Tower.

Hang Dau Water Tower

The Hang Dau Water Tower is a historically significant structure, closely tied to the memory of Hanoi’s people for over 130 years.

1. Where is Hang Dau Water Tower?

Hang Dau Tower is located at the six-way intersection of Hang Dau, where six famous Old Quarter streets meet: Hang Luoc, Hang Dau, Hang Giay, Quan Thanh, Hang Than, and Phan Dinh Phung, belonging to Quan Thanh Ward, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi. This prime location not only makes the tower stand out in the city center but also allows visitors to easily combine their visit with nearby attractions such as Dong Xuan Market, O Quan Chuong Gate, or the flower street of Phan Dinh Phung.

From afar, visitors can easily spot this structure thanks to its prominent cylindrical gray stone design, towering over the surrounding rows of houses. The tower has three floors, a conical roof, and is built from solid stone blocks. Locals often call it by familiar names such as “Bot Hang Dau,” “Dai Dau,” or “Round Water Plant.”

You can easily get there by public or private transportation:

  • Bus: Take routes No. 14, 18, 22A, or 23 and stop at Quan Thanh station, about a 5-minute walk from the tower.
  • Motorbike/Car: Hang Dau Water Tower is only 2 km from Hoan Kiem Lake. You can park at Hang Dau Flower Garden opposite the tower or at nearby parking lots.

2. The Significance of Hang Dau Water Tower

The Hang Dau Water Tower is not only an ancient architectural structure but also carries deep historical, cultural, and touristic value, becoming an enduring symbol in the heart of Hanoi.

2.1 History of Hang Dau Water Tower

The Hang Dau Water Tower was built by the French in 1894, along with the Don Thuy Water Tower, to provide clean water for soldiers and civilians during the French colonial period. As part of the first modern water supply system in Hanoi, the tower was connected to the Yen Phu Water Plant, marking an important step in the capital’s urban infrastructure. The structure was built from solid stone blocks, with a diameter of 19 meters, a capacity of 1,250m³, and designed to resemble a fortress, reflecting both durability and the engineering vision of that era.

However, by 1960, the tower ceased operations due to the development of a new water supply system. Afterwards, it was abandoned and even faced the risk of demolition because of its prime location at a busy traffic intersection. In 2010, the tower was restored with an investment of 3 billion VND on the occasion of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi. By 2023, the Hang Dau Water Tower was “reborn” as an art and creative space, opening free to the public as part of the Hanoi Design & Creativity Festival.

2.2 Cultural and Touristic Value

More than just an old monument, the Hang Dau Water Tower symbolizes the intersection of past and present, deeply tied to urban life and the cultural memory of Hanoians.

Thanks to its unique architecture and location at a bustling six-way intersection, the tower has become an attractive “check-in” spot for young people and international visitors. When it first opened to the public in 2023, the tower provided a space blending history and creativity, enriching the experience of exploring Hanoi. It also contributes to connecting famous destinations such as the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake, forming a seamless and diverse tourist route.

3. What’s Inside Hang Dau Water Tower?

Behind its solid exterior, the Hang Dau Water Tower hides a unique interior where historical architecture meets modern creative art.

  • Cylindrical design and interior space: The tower has a diameter of 19m, three floors, and a total height of about 25m (including the conical roof). The interior space covers about 250m², surrounded by thick stone walls and dotted with 54 narrow arched windows, reminiscent of an ancient fortress. These windows provide natural light, creating a mysterious and ancient atmosphere. However, 17 windows on the first floor have been sealed to protect the structure.
  • The giant water tank: At the center of the tower is a steel tank with a capacity of 1,250m³, supported by eight stone walls arranged like fan blades. This was once the core of the French colonial water supply system, with pipes and steel valves still intact, now covered with moss from the passage of time.
  • Circular passageways: The space is divided into 12 compartments (8 large outer sections, 4 smaller inner ones), forming a circular exploration route along the walls, giving visitors the feeling of entering a historical “cave.”

4. Tips for Visiting Hang Dau Water Tower

4.1 Visiting Hours

Currently, the Hang Dau Water Tower is not open regularly, but only welcomes visitors during special occasions, usually within cultural events. Travelers can follow the event’s official channels or the city’s cultural-art fanpages for schedules.

However, you can admire the tower’s exterior at any time of day. Early mornings and late afternoons are ideal for photography, with beautiful light and fewer crowds.

4.2 Combine with Nearby Attractions

With its location at the central six-way intersection, you can easily combine your visit with other famous Hanoi destinations:

  • Phan Dinh Phung Street: One of the most beautiful streets in Hanoi, shaded by rows of century-old dracontomelon trees.
  • Dong Xuan Market and O Quan Chuong Gate: Popular with international tourists and lovers of traditional culture.
  • Hanoi Old Quarter: Streets such as Hang Ma, Hang Luoc, and Hang Dong are only a few minutes’ walk from the tower, offering many eateries and shops.
  • Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple: Less than a 10-minute drive, ideal for ending the trip with a lakeside coffee or enjoying Old Quarter cuisine.
