Do You Need a Visa to Travel to India? What to Know

With the world's oldest civilization spanning 5,000 years, India is one of the top destinations for travelers wishing to explore the birthplace of major religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Additionally, India attracts tourists with its architecture, cuisine, culture, and more.

To explore this country, applying for an India tourist visa is an indispensable step. In this article, let's learn about the latest procedures for obtaining an India tourist visa, preparing for a smooth and convenient journey to the "subcontinent" with over 1.4 billion people.

1. Do You Need a Visa to Travel to India?

Foreign citizens wishing to enter India for any purpose—be it tourism, business, visiting relatives, studying, or working—are required to obtain a visa.

Some cases are exempt from visa requirements:

  • Citizens of Bhutan, Maldives, and Nepal: When arriving in India, you are exempt from visa requirements for up to 90 days, unless entering via China.
  • Holders of PIO Card: Individuals possessing a Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card can enter and stay in India for up to 90 days without needing a visa.

From this, it is evident that Vietnamese tourists who wish to visit India must apply for a visa.

1.1 Types of Indian Visas

Based on the purpose of entry, Indian visas are categorized into various types serving different applicants, such as Business Visa (E), Employment Visa (E), Student Visa (S), Transit Visa (TR), Medical Visa (Med), Medical Attendant Visa, Conference Visa (C), Marriage Visa (X), and Tourist Visa (T). Indian visas are also classified according to their validity period and the number of entries allowed.

Depending on your purpose and entry requirements, you should carefully research the appropriate type of visa when traveling to India.

1.2 Visa Regulations for Vietnamese Tourists

For Vietnamese tourists visiting India for the first time, a tourist visa is usually required, considering the validity period and the number of entries. This is the essential travel document for tourists to visit the country known as the "cradle" of Buddhism.

2. What Do You Need to Prepare to Apply for an Indian Visa?

2.1 Passport Requirements

Before starting the visa application process, ensure that your passport is valid for at least six more months and has two blank pages for the visa stamp.

2.2 Documents for Applying for an Indian Tourist Visa

If you are applying for a regular visa, the documents you need to prepare include:

  • Printed Visa Application Form: A hard copy of the regular visa application form downloaded from the system (must include the uploaded photo). Access it at https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/Registration.
  • One Passport-Sized Photo: A 5x5 cm photo to be attached to the application form (white background, full face, clear image, no shadows).
  • Original Passport: Signed, along with a photocopy of the information page.
  • Photocopy of National ID Card: For Vietnamese citizens; for foreigners, a Temporary Residence Card and Work Permit.
  • Photocopy of Vietnamese Visa and Entry Stamp: For foreigners.
  • Photocopies of Flight Tickets and Hotel Reservations (if available).
  • Declaration Forms: General commitment, commitment not to use satellite phones, study abroad, journalist declaration, etc.
  • Bank Statements: Bank account statements for the last three months or other financial proof documents.

2.3 Indian Visa Fees

Each type of visa has a different fee. However, for Vietnamese citizens, you can refer to the following information issued by the Indian Embassy in Hanoi:

  • Tourist Visa Valid for Up to 1 Year: Multiple entries allowed; fee is 2,429,000 VND.
  • Tourist Visa Valid for Over 1 Year Up to 5 Years: Multiple entries allowed; fee is 4,788,000 VND.
  • Fees effective from April 1, 2023 (in VND).

4. Frequently Asked Questions About Applying for an Indian Tourist Visa

4.1 How Early Should You Submit Your Indian Visa Application?

To ensure a smooth visa application process without affecting your travel plans, it's recommended to submit your Indian tourist visa application at least 4–6 weeks before your departure date. Applying early provides ample time to receive your visa and handle any unforeseen issues.

4.2 Is It Difficult to Apply for an Indian Tourist Visa?

Applying for an Indian visa has become much more straightforward thanks to the availability of the e-Visa. You simply need to upload the necessary documents to the official Embassy website, pay online, and wait for the results within 1–3 days.
