3. History of Truc Lam Zen Monastery Da Lat

An interesting fact is that Truc Lam Zen Monastery Da Lat was formed from a dream of Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu. In 1986, the Zen Master dreamt that he was hugging the neck of a phoenix and soaring into the sky. This dream prompted him to survey Phoenix Mountain in Da Lat to build a place for monks to practice, because it has a fresh climate all year round, beautiful nature, and a quiet, tranquil space.

In 1993, Truc Lam Zen Monastery Da Lat began construction and was completed within one year. The design of the monastery was initially sketched by Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu, then developed and created by three architects: Tran Duc Loc, Vu Xuan Hung, and Ngo Viet Thu—the latter being the architect who designed the Independence Palace in Saigon.

The monastery covers an area of up to 30 hectares, with four main areas: the Abbot's Quarters, the Inner Monastery for Monks, the Inner Monastery for Nuns, and the Outer Monastery. Each area is subdivided into 8-12 sections for easier management and maintenance.

To reach the main hall, you have to walk up a steep path with 140 stone steps, flanked by towering pine trees leading through three Tam Quan gates. The main hall area covers about 192 square meters. In the center stands a 2-meter-high statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, holding a lotus branch in his right hand, according to the Zen story “Holding up a Flower and Smiling.” On either side are paintings of Bodhisattva Manjushri riding a lion and Bodhisattva Samantabhadra riding a six-tusked white elephant. Above the main hall are bas-reliefs depicting the Eight Stages of Buddha Shakyamuni's enlightenment.

To the right of the main hall is the Bell Tower area, featuring a great bronze bell weighing about 1.1 tons, intricately carved. If you are lucky enough to visit when the bell rings, you will clearly feel the lightness and peace as if all worldly sorrows are washed away.

With the aim of reviving Vietnamese Zen Buddhism from the Tran Dynasty, the monastery often organizes short-term meditation courses, attracting many monks, nuns, and Buddhists to study. Monastics start sitting meditation from 3:00 AM each day, sitting three sessions per day, each session lasting 2 hours.
