Travel Experience in Laos – What to Know & How to Prepare?

Laos is a country in Southeast Asia known for its rich culture and natural scenery. With a long border stretching from Lai Chau to Kontum and many international border gates, Laos shares cultural similarities with Vietnam while still maintaining distinct traditions, cuisine, and natural landscapes. To understand what to prepare for a trip to Laos, let’s explore more Laos travel reviews with Vietjet in the article below.

1. How to travel to Laos?

Thanks to the close geographical distance between Vietnam and Laos, and a shared border, traveling is quite easy and convenient. Depending on your needs and budget, you can choose one of the following options:

1.1 Traveling to Laos by road from Hanoi

From Hanoi, you can buy a bus ticket to Vientiane, exiting Vietnam via the Cau Treo border gate (Ha Tinh), or travel to Vinh to catch a bus to Xieng Khouang via the Nam Can border gate. Ticket prices are around 600,000 VND/one-way sleeper bus. With this option, you don’t need to worry about immigration procedures as the bus company will handle the border stamps for you.

1.2 Traveling to Laos by road from Ho Chi Minh City

From Ho Chi Minh City, you can travel to Laos by road via Kon Tum, Quang Tri, Hue, or Quy Nhon. Among these, the Kon Tum – Laos route is the most commonly chosen. You only need a passport to start your journey.

Laos travel experience

Currently, there are 33 active Vietnam – Laos border gate pairs, including 9 international gates, 6 main gates, and 18 sub-gates. So traveling by land is not too difficult.

1.3 Traveling to Laos by plane

If you want to save time, flying is a good option. Vietjet currently operates direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Vientiane, Laos’s capital, with 4 round trips per week. Each flight takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. After arriving in Vientiane, you can travel to other provinces by road.

You can check the latest flight schedules and ticket prices to Laos HERE to plan your exciting trip.

Additionally, a great way to save on travel costs is to “hunt” for cheap air tickets. Don’t miss Vietjet’s 0 VND ticket promotions. Every Friday, Vietjet also offers massive discounts on international routes—full details HERE.

2. Best time to visit Laos?

The ideal time to visit Laos is usually from October to May. During this period, the weather is dry and warm—perfect for travel. You’ll enjoy the best conditions for sightseeing and exploring Laos’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Especially between November and March, there are many large and important festivals, offering unforgettable experiences.

Laos travel experience

Outdoor activities such as visiting heritage sites, river cruises, and swimming in emerald lakes during the dry season offer fantastic experiences for tourists in Laos.

3. Where to stay for self-guided travel in Laos?

When traveling in Laos, you may consider the following accommodation options:

  • Hotels and guesthouses in major cities like Luang Prabang and Vientiane, with a wide range of choices from standard rooms to luxury resorts
  • Homestays or guesthouses in rural areas like the Bolaven Plateau or Si Phan Don for local life experiences and nature immersion
  • Beachside resorts or bungalows in Vang Vieng or countryside areas for a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

Your choice of accommodation depends on your preferences, budget, and travel goals. It’s hard to determine an average price as it varies based on location, time, and service standards.

4. Transportation within Laos

According to experienced travelers, the best options for short-distance travel in Laos are Tuk Tuks or pickup trucks (a small local truck type). These are affordable options, but you should keep a few tips in mind:

  • Tuk Tuks charge per ride, so sharing with more people lowers the cost
  • At bus stations, look for large groups heading to the same area to share the cost
  • For long-distance travel, visit tour offices or hotels, which usually sell inter-provincial bus tickets
  • Avoid round-trip tickets as they tend to be more expensive
  • Always negotiate for a better fare before setting off.

5. What to prepare for a trip to Laos?

Before traveling to Laos, make sure you prepare the following:

  • Essential documents: A passport valid for at least 6 months; other documents like bank cards, medical insurance, etc.
  • Personal items: Enough cash for your trip; medication and essentials such as hats, sunscreen, cold medicine; comfortable and modest clothing suitable for Laos’s Buddhist culture, especially when visiting religious sites
  • Contact information: Phone numbers for your hotel, tour guide, and the Vietnamese Embassy in Laos
  • Cultural knowledge: Learn basic customs and etiquette in Laos to show respect and enhance your experience.

With these preparations, you’ll enjoy a safe, smooth, and fulfilling journey in Laos.
