Taichung Airport was built during the Japanese occupation, originally called "Kōkan Airport." In 1955, it was renamed Ching Chuan Kang (CCK) and served the U.S. Air Force. In September 2003, the airport's infrastructure was completed and officially began operating commercial flights in May 2004.
Initially, the airport only served domestic flights, but in January 2017, Ching Chuan Kang Airport was officially upgraded and renamed Taichung International Airport, becoming the only airport serving Taichung City.
