The Nghinh Ong Festival is an occasion for the fishermen of the pearl island to express their reverence to the sacred sea deity, praying for favorable conditions at sea.

1. Introduction to the Nghinh Ong Festival in Phu Quoc

1.1 History of the Nghinh Ong Festival in Phu Quoc

The history of the Nghinh Ong Festival in Phu Quoc is closely linked to the worship of Ong Fish (whales) among the coastal fishermen of Vietnam. They believe that Ong Fish is a sacred sea deity that brings luck, peace, and protection to those who work at sea from storms and high waves whenever they go out to sea.

The belief in the worship of Ong Fish originates from the culture of the Cham people, which was introduced to our country long ago. From this cultural exchange, over time, the worship of Ong Fish has become an important spiritual cultural activity for Vietnamese fishermen to this day. Therefore, for the people of Phu Quoc island in particular, the Nghinh Ong Festival holds immense significance, serving as a spiritual anchor that helps them express their reverence and pray for a prosperous and happy life, with favorable weather conditions.

1.2 When does the Nghinh Ong Festival in Phu Quoc take place?

Every year, the Nghinh Ong Festival in Phu Quoc is held on the 15th and 16th of the 8th lunar month. 2. Highlighted activities in the Nghinh Ong Festival

The Nghinh Ong Festival in Phu Quoc lasts for 2-3 days, featuring two main parts: the Ceremony and the Festival.

2.1 The procession of Ong Fish on the sea - Nam Hai General

The procession of Ong Fish on the sea - Nam Hai General is an important activity of the Ceremony and takes place on the first day of the Nghinh Ong Festival in Phu Quoc. This solemn procession reenacts the Nam Hai General boarding the dragon boat to go to sea. The procession is elaborately decorated, carrying the spirit tablet of Ong Fish, which is taken from Thuy Lang to the dragon boat and out to sea.

Throughout the journey, the locals will prepare offerings and incense to welcome the Nam Hai General. The solemn welcome features traditional costumes of the fishermen along with ritual ceremonies, including the dragon boat carrying the water general, and hundreds of decorated boats adorned with flags and flowers accompanying them to the sea to welcome Ong.

The dragon boat is associated with many major festivals in Vietnam, reflecting rich cultural and spiritual significance.

After performing the ritual to welcome Ong Fish, the procession returns to shore, bringing him back to Thuy Lang. Here, a lion dance, dragon dance, and other performances are prepared to welcome him solemnly.

2.2 Traditional worship rituals

In addition to the procession of Ong Fish on the sea, the traditional worship rituals are also a unique cultural aspect of the Nghinh Ong heritage.

Vegetarian and meat offerings

First, we must mention the vegetarian and meat offerings, which are important parts that express the reverence of the fishing community towards Nam Hai General.

In the vegetarian offering, the offerings are usually simple with fruits, cakes, and incense, symbolizing purity and gratitude towards the deities. Following that is the meat offering, which is more abundant with typical dishes such as roasted pig, boiled chicken, sticky rice, and seafood, symbolizing the prosperity of the island's waters. In a solemn atmosphere, the elders represent the villagers to recite prayers, conveying wishes for a year of favorable weather, safe fishing, and bountiful catches.

The ceremony at Thuy Lang

This ritual takes place after the procession has welcomed Nam Hai General back to Thuy Lang. At this time, a large number of local people and tourists join in the solemn atmosphere with traditional rituals such as prayers for peace, large offerings, and traditional opera performances. The elders will continue to preside over this Ceremony, reading prayers and offering incense at the Ong Fish altar.

2.3 Cultural and artistic activities in the Festival

After the Ceremony, during the remaining hours of the first day and the next day, the Festival will commence with many unique cultural activities. The locals will celebrate with folk games and seafood markets. Some exciting activities that enhance the vibrancy of this Phu Quoc sea festival include traditional boat racing, duck catching, tug-of-war, traditional opera, showcasing and selling various seafood and local specialties,...
