Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge: The Most Picturesque Natural Landscape in Phu Yen

Wooden bridges often evoke a sense of simplicity, rustic charm, and peacefulness. In Phu Yen province, there is one such destination that features the longest wooden bridge in Vietnam, set amidst vast waters and stunning scenery—Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge.

So how long is this bridge, and what makes it so special? Let Vietjet take you on a journey to discover this iconic location!

Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge: The Most Picturesque Natural Landscape in Phu Yen

Surrounded by endless water and framed by lush green mountains, Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge is a must-see destination when visiting Phu Yen.

1. Introduction to Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge

Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge is located in Phu Yen province and is also known as Mieu Ong Cop Bridge or Binh Thanh Bridge. It connects the northern area of An Ninh Tay commune to Song Cau town, and it is widely regarded as the longest wooden bridge in Vietnam.

1.1 The History Behind the Bridge

The bridge was constructed in 1998 with an investment of 1 billion VND, serving as a crucial transportation route for local residents traveling between An Ninh Tay and Song Cau.

The name “Mr. Cop” (Ông Cọp) originates from a well-known local legend. It is said that in the past, a famous midwife lived in the area. One night, a tiger came to her home, terrifying the locals. However, the tiger had no intention of harming anyone—it had come to bring the midwife to the mountain to assist a tigress giving birth.

After successfully helping the tiger cubs come into the world, the tiger respectfully returned the midwife home and later repaid her kindness with a wild boar. Even after the midwife passed away, the tiger would regularly visit her grave out of gratitude.

Touched by the tiger’s loyalty and sense of honor, the locals built a shrine to commemorate Mr. Cop. Since the bridge is located near this shrine, it naturally came to be known as Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge.

1.2 How Long is Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge?

Seen from above, Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge is recognized as “the longest wooden bridge in Vietnam”, stretching nearly 1km in length.

With a length of approximately 800 meters and a width ranging from 1.5 to 1.8 meters, Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge is believed to be the longest wooden bridge in Vietnam. It is mainly constructed using timber planks from casuarina and eucalyptus trees. Meanwhile, the handrails and structural frame are built with sturdy old bamboo trunks.

Although the materials seem modest and not particularly solid, the bridge has served local transportation and tourism for over 25 years. To ensure smooth travel, the builders even placed reserve wooden planks underneath the bridge for quick replacements in case of damage.

1.3 Toll Rates for Crossing Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge

When crossing Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge, visitors are required to pay a small toll fee, as regulated by the local authorities. This fee helps cover annual maintenance and post-storm repairs.

Although a toll is collected, the fee is very affordable. As the bridge is made of wood and only about 1.8m wide, it is open only to pedestrians and motorbikes.

4. Travel Tips for Visiting Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge in Phu Yen

4.1 Best Time to Visit Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge

Phu Yen has two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. From October to December, the region experiences storms and heavy rainfall, during which locals often repair or reinforce the wooden bridge. The weather is often cloudy and gloomy, so this is not the ideal time to visit or take photos.

The best time to experience the peaceful charm of Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge is during the dry season (January to September). Though it may be sunny, there’s little rain, the water is calm, and the skies are clear—perfect for scenic walks and photography.

This period is also ideal for capturing stunning “Instagram-worthy” shots that showcase the bridge's rustic beauty and tranquil setting.

4.2 Things to Keep in Mind When Visiting Mr. Cop Wooden Bridge

When visiting the bridge—which is still a daily passage for locals—here are some important tips to be respectful and stay safe:

  • If you plan to visit Mr. Cop Shrine, dress modestly and appropriately out of respect for the sacred site. Always ask locals for permission before taking photos near the shrine.
  • The bridge isn’t perfectly straight—some wooden planks are short, resulting in uneven sections. You’ll need good handling skills if crossing by motorbike.
  • Only pedestrians and motorbikes are allowed. Cars are not permitted on the bridge, so if you’re traveling by car, you’ll need to take an alternate route to reach nearby attractions.
  • Do not litter. Help preserve the natural beauty and cultural significance of the bridge and the shrine.
