Kien Trung Palace , a palace within the Imperial City of Hue, was commissioned by Emperor Khai Dinh of the Nguyen Dynasty and built between 1921 and 1923, coinciding with the construction of his tomb as a residence within the royal palace. It served as the residence of the last two Nguyen Dynasty emperors: Emperor Khải Định and Emperor Bao Dai.

Kien Trung Palace is situated on the rear-most section of the Imperial City of Hue, along the divine axis, directly behind Khon Thai Palace. During the reign of Emperor Minh Mang, there was a structure here called Minh Vien Pavilion , which existed from 1827 to 1876. Under Emperor Duy Tân, the structure was renovated and renamed Du Cuu Pavilion (1913-1916). In 1921, Emperor Khai Dinh rebuilt the palace anew and named it Kien Trung Palace. It was also where Emperor Khai Dinh passed away on November 6, 1925.

Moreover, Kien Trung Palace was the residence where Emperor Bảo Đại and his wife, Empress Nam Phuong, lived. Significantly, it was also the site where Emperor Bảo Đại first met with the delegation from the Provisional Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. They discussed abdication, marking the end of the millennia-old feudal regime and ushering in a new era of national independence and freedom.

However, in December 1946, the Viet Minh forces executed a scorched-earth strategy and completely destroyed Kien Trung Palace. The Imperial City of Hue was set ablaze, leaving only the foundations of the palace and its perimeter walls.

Since 2013, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center has initiated a restoration project for Kien Trung Palace. This effort involves collaboration with numerous historians, cultural experts, and artists specializing in Hue's history and culture, alongside the participation of the Central Institute of Construction Science and Technology.

After over 70 years in ruins, during Tet Giap Thin 2024, Kien Trung Palace has been restored to its majestic and historical glory, continuing its mission as a witness to history, recounting the stories of the Nguyen dynasty's imperial court.

The architectural style of Kien Trung Palace harmoniously combines European influences: French architecture, Italian Renaissance architecture, and ancient Vietnamese architecture. The front of the palace is adorned with colorful ceramic pieces.

In front of the palace is a royal garden, featuring three dragon-shaped staircases leading up to the terrace of Kien Trung Palace. The main floor consists of 13 doors and windows: the central chamber has 5 doors, with each side chamber having 3 doors, and 2 projecting doors at the corners. The upper floor features architecture similar to the main floor. At the top, the tiled roof is decorated with a balustrade that embodies distinctive Vietnamese architectural features.
