6 Famous Tourist Spots in Almaty, Kazakhstan - "The Apple City"

If you're wondering where Almaty is, it's located in southeastern Kazakhstan, at the foot of the Tian Shan Mountains. Once the capital of Kazakhstan and an important part of the Silk Road in Central Asia, Almaty is always regarded as a major industrial, scientific, historical, cultural, and commercial center of Kazakhstan. Additionally, Almaty attracts tourists with its breathtaking natural scenery, unique blend of modern and classical architecture, rich cuisine, and hospitable people. Notably, Almaty is also known as "the apple city" because it is believed to be the place where apples were first discovered (by Alexander the Great), who brought them back to Greece, making the apple a symbol of European culture and history.

Join Vietjet in exploring the Top 6 famous tourist spots in Almaty to gain more useful insights about this fascinating Central Asian land!

1. Panfilov Park and the War Memorial

The first Almaty tourist destination you should visit is Panfilov Park - one of the city's most famous green spaces. The park covers an area of 18 hectares, with paths and roads shaded by lush greenery, including ancient trees like oaks, maples, pines, trembling aspens, and firs.

The park is named after the hero Panfilov, who, along with 28 Red Army soldiers, bravely sacrificed his life outside Moscow while fighting the Nazi German forces. The paths in the park are also named after these 28 heroes.

The park has a War Memorial area dedicated to commemorating all Kazakh soldiers who died in World War I and World War II.

2. Zenkov Cathedral

The Zenkov Orthodox Cathedral is a rare church built during the Tsarist era that still exists today. Nestled within the green expanse of Panfilov National Park, the church is entirely made of wood, including its foundation. Remarkably, despite numerous earthquakes, the church has remained standing tall without using a single iron nail in its construction.

Inside the church is a magnificent space with royal-style interiors, yet it is extremely solemn and serene. The cathedral displays many paintings depicting the life of Jesus Christ and precious artifacts linked to Kazakhstan's history through various periods.

Zenkov Cathedral currently holds two records: it is the second tallest wooden building in the world and one of the 8 most unique wooden structures in the world.

3. Kazakh Museum of Folk Musical Instruments

Also located in Panfilov National Park is another entirely wooden architectural masterpiece, the Kazakh Museum of Folk Musical Instruments. The architect who designed Zenkov Cathedral also designed this building. If you are a music lover, especially of musical instruments, this place is a must-visit.

The museum's grounds display and preserve many types of folk instruments such as horns, bagpipes, wooden harps, and stringed instruments like the dombra and kobyz. Additionally, traditional musical instruments from other countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkey are also on display here.

4. Kok-Tobe Hill

Kok-Tobe, meaning "Green Hill," is a hill located on the southeastern edge of the city, at an elevation of 1,100 meters above sea level. This is one of the most famous check-in spots in Almaty. Here, you can experience the most beautiful cable car ride in the city, offering panoramic views of Almaty and the Tian Shan Mountains from above. At the top of the hill is a television tower with an impressive height of 372 meters. Additionally, you can enjoy exciting outdoor activities such as forest trekking, hilltop camping, and watching the sunrise/sunset.

5. National Museum of Kazakhstan

The National Museum of Kazakhstan is the largest museum in Almaty and one of the largest museums in Central Asia. Here, you can delve deeper into the politics, history, culture, and archaeology of Kazakhstan through a collection of over 200,000 artifacts displayed in different sections. You'll be taken back in time to important historical milestones such as the Bronze Age, World War I, and World War II.

The market is divided into two floors, offering a wide range of goods such as nuts and dried fruits from all over Central Asia, spices, meats, fish, fermented foods, processed foods, medicinal herbs, and more. You can buy these items as gifts for your loved ones.

Additionally, there are many Central Asian specialty dishes at the Green Bazaar that you shouldn't miss, such as kazy (horse meat sausage), beshbarmak (boiled noodles with horse meat), laghman (noodle soup), kurdyuk (salted or smoked sheep fat), kymys and shubat (fermented horse and camel milk).
