3. The Development of Kunming Changshui International Airport

The construction of Kunming Changshui International Airport began in 2009. Initially, it was named Zheng He International Airport, after Zheng He, a famous Chinese mariner, explorer, and diplomat. However, due to various issues during the construction phase, the project was not completed until July 2011.

After its completion in July 2011, Kunming Changshui International Airport officially took over all flight operations from Wujiaba Airport in January 2012. It now serves as a hub for more than 15 international airlines.

The airport was built with a total investment of over 23 billion CNY, with a vision to become an aerial economic corridor connecting Kunming—and by extension, China—with cities around the world.

Although it has only one terminal, the terminal floor area covers 548,000 square meters, including three above-ground levels (with one section having four levels) and three underground levels. The terminal was designed by British architectural firm Arup. The airport features 84 aircraft stands and is projected to serve 65 million passengers annually by 2040.

Kunming Airport has surpassed Mexico City International Airport to become the fifth-largest airport terminal in the world. It is also the largest single-terminal structure in China, and the second-largest terminal in the country, only behind Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport. According to 2021 statistics, Kunming Airport handled 32,221,195 passengers, demonstrating its growing importance in connecting Kunming with the rest of the world.

In terms of architectural design, the terminal roof edges were created by architects from the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, using a complex design.
