To prepare for your trip to this beautiful country, exchanging Vietnamese Dong to Australian Dollars is a top concern for travelers — especially those traveling abroad for the first time, who often wonder: What’s the AUD to VND exchange rate? Where to exchange AUD? How to convert VND to AUD?

If you're seeking answers to these questions, let Vietjet guide you through where to buy Australian dollars and the key things to note when exchanging money for your trip.

Exchanging money is an essential step before exploring beautiful Australia.

1. Currency in Australia

The official currency in the Commonwealth of Australia is the Australian Dollar (AUD), introduced on February 14, 1966. AUD is available in both coins and polymer notes:

• Coins: Common denominations include 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 dollar, and 2 dollars. Each coin features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and iconic Australian symbols on the reverse.

• Notes: Made from durable, waterproof polymer, Australian notes come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 AUD. Each denomination has unique imagery and color schemes.

AUD includes both coins and polymer notes.

2. AUD to VND Exchange Rate

Understanding the exchange rate helps you better budget for your trip. Note that exchange rates fluctuate regularly, and there may be a difference between buying and selling prices of a few hundred dong.

According to bank rates on November 12, 2024, 1 AUD = 16,613.47 VND.
Based on this rate, here's a quick conversion table:

Note: These figures are time-sensitive and subject to change. Always check the latest rates before exchanging.

3.2.1 Banks in Vietnam

Banks offer stable exchange rates and transparent processes. However, procedures may be time-consuming, requiring full documentation and transactions during business hours.

3.2.2 Gold Shops in Vietnam

A faster and more flexible option — many gold shops allow after-hours transactions. However, rates may vary and there’s a higher risk of counterfeit currency or scams.

3.2.3 Airports in Vietnam and Australia

You can exchange currency at major airports like Nội Bài or Tân Sơn Nhất in Vietnam, or after landing in Australia. Though convenient, exchange rates at airports are generally less competitive.

3.2.4 ATMs in Australia

You may withdraw AUD via international cards at ATMs, though transaction fees vary depending on your bank.

You can also exchange AUD at Australian airports upon arrival.

4. What to Prepare When Exchanging Money Before Traveling

If you decide to exchange currency before departure, here’s what you need:

ID Card: Required for most bank or forex transactions

Flight Ticket: Some banks require proof of travel to approve foreign exchange requests

Estimated Budget: Plan your budget based on trip duration, itinerary, and daily expenses. Add a buffer for unexpected costs.
Here are average daily costs in Australia:

• Hotel: 80 – 150 AUD/night

• Car rental: 60 – 100 AUD/day

• Meals: 10 – 15 AUD/meal

• Important: If you're carrying over 5,000 USD (≈ 6,439 AUD), you must declare it to customs when entering or leaving the country.

5. Exchange Tips

5.1 Recognizing Australian Currency

You can identify denominations by color, imagery, and coin design:

1. Coins:

• 1 Cent: Silver, features Acrobates pygmaeus (a gliding possum)

• 2 Cent: Silver, lizard image

• 5 Cent: Silver, echidna (spiny anteater)

• 10 Cent: Silver, Lyrebird

• 20 Cent: Silver with ridged edge, platypus

• 50 Cent: Silver, Australian coat of arms

• 1 AUD: Gold-colored, kangaroo

• 2 AUD: Bimetallic, Aboriginal elder

2. Banknotes:

• 5 AUD: Light purple, Queen Elizabeth II

• 10 AUD: Blue, Banjo Paterson

• 20 AUD: Orange, Mary Reibey

• 50 AUD: Green, David Unaipon

• 100 AUD: Pink, Dame Nellie Melba

Recognizing AUD denominations helps ensure easier spending in Australia.

5.2 Tips to Detect Counterfeit AUD

Australian banknotes have advanced security features:

• Material: Made of durable polymer, not easy to tear or stain. If the note feels unusually thin, thick, or fragile, it could be fake.

• Print Quality: Genuine notes have sharp, clear images. Blurred or faded prints may indicate counterfeits.

• Color-shifting Ink (OVI): Tilting the note should reveal color changes.

• Transparent Window: Clear polymer windows show crisp images and don’t smudge.
Under light, the diamond-shaped designs on both sides align to form a 7-point star. Look for the Australian coat of arms near this area.

• Fluorescent Fibers: Visible under UV light.

• Serial Number: Should be embossed and consistent.
